Like many people at nineteen years old, Stephanie did not have a clear vision of what career path she wanted to pursue. After coming to atWork Australia’s Workforce Australia office in Ulladulla, NSW, and participating in an activations program, Stephanie now has dreams and aspirations to have a career as a Librarian.
When Stephanie attended her first activation appointment and met her Activations Consultant, Emma, she was very shy and struggled to engage. The pair discussed Stephanie’s career goals and her various options. However, Stephanie was really unsure about what she wanted to do. Emma provided Stephanie with some options to consider for how she could meet her Mandatory Activation Requirements, and together they decided to undertake a Certificate III in Retail. This course was a great opportunity for Stephanie to develop her skills, build her confidence and encouraged her to get out of her home environment and interact with people in a face-to-face setting.
For many weeks, Stephanie did not attend her activity and was not engaging with her Activations Consultant, Emma. When Emma met with Stephanie at her second Activations appointment, they discussed why Stephanie had not been engaging and she advised it was due to her lack of confidence and pressure at home to look after her younger siblings. Together, they discussed the positive outcomes Stephanie could achieve by attending the course and the potential employment opportunities she could pursue once she completed her course.
The support from Emma has helped to boost Stephanie’s motivation and she is now attending her course each week and is well ahead of where she needs to be. Stephanie’s Activations Consultant, Emma, said, “Stephanie is continuing to build her confidence and is coming to all her appointments. She is working closely with her Job Coach to secure a position at a local café; she is looking forward to completing her Certificate III in Retail.”
Stephanie now has the confidence to ask for assistance with her job applications and she is ready to start taking the next steps towards achieving her career goal of becoming a Librarian.
