Adam arrived in Australia in 2013. He was born in Sudan and only sporadically attended education until Grade 6. He completed a Certificate II in Spoken and Written English in 2019 and is now confident in speaking English but has difficulties with writing in English.
Adam lives with back pain caused by a bulging disc in the lumbosacral joint, nerve impingement and arthritis. He has also been diagnosed with depression in 2014 and experiences frustration and low moods as a result of his health condition.
He worked as a piggery attendant for the last five years but had to resign from this role and look for a change in career due to his back pain.
With a limited education and employment history, Adam decided to study for the Certificate III in Security Operations, completing the course prior to connecting with atWork Australia.
Adam approached atWork Australia’s Mooroopna office and was introduced to Disability Employment Services Job Coach, Brad. He assisted Adam with building a resume, highlighting his skills in the security industry. A key area Brad focused on was building a rapport and gaining his trust. At first, Adam was skeptical of how atWork Australia could assist him. Within a short amount of time, Brad managed to gain his trust through honesty and following up on things that he said he would do for him.
Brad has a background in Security Operations and has worked in the industry since 2003. This helped immensely in building a rapport with Adam, providing him an in-depth explanation of how the security industry operates.
Straight after Adam received his Security Licence, Brad shared Adam’s resume with various security companies within the local Goulburn Valley and Campaspe region and Adam received his first job interview just a few weeks later.
Adam was concerned about the COVID-19 lockdown in Victoria and how it would impact his employment chances but Brad was able to secure a suitable role in the security industry for him.
Adam was delighted when he received the job offer and has been working in his new role since. Adam is much happier now and is grateful that his life has changed for the better. He is now able to afford things and does not have to struggle with bills and living costs. Due to his new employment, he overthinks less and feels less depressed.
Adam was very happy with the help of Job Coach Brad and his ability to trust him. He is looking forward to his future and gaining more opportunities within the security industry. “I wish everybody would be like Brad and that they all wanted to help each other,” says Adam.
Brad adds: “It has been an enjoyable experience working with Adam, and changing his career and his life for the better. Adam now appears a lot happier. I have seen him at his workplace and he is really well-suited to the industry.
