Disability Employment Services client, Diego’s world was upended by the passing of his father.
Diego had worked for the past 10 years in the family business with his father. Six months after his father’s passing, he was connected with Job Coach, Kylie, in atWork Australia’s Bendigo office.
“When I first met Diego, he was still grieving, and living with a mental health condition,” said Job Coach, Kylie.
“All Diego had known for the past 10 years was the family business with his father, and looking for work kept bringing the grief to the forefront as it was his main work experience.”
Kylie supported Diego to take the time he needed to recover and focus on his health. She walked beside him and was there for him when he was ready, rather than setting unrealistic expectations.
Diego has actively addressed his mental health over this time and with the assistance of a great support network has gradually obtained self-belief.
“After 18 months, Diego came to me and said he felt he had the confidence to work again, and he already had a plan and a career in mind,” said Kylie.
They discussed the support he would need to achieve his goals.
Diego wanted to help others in the community. He wanted to be a support worker.
Diego found an employer who he wanted to work with for his long-term support worker goal. He started working with them in a home cleaning role to ease back into working with casual hours.
He hopes that one day, the employer will be able to offer him a role in Individual Support.
In the meantime, Kylie is working with Diego’s employer to help him sign up for a Certificate III in Individual Support.
