Upon coming to atWork Australia, Susan had been living with chronic mental and physical health concerns.  It was often very difficult for Susan to leave her house.

When Susan first commenced with atWork Australia Rockingham, she admits that she was apprehensive about engaging with the team. As there was minimal prior communication or rapport, she was less trusting of new people and new environments.

However,  Susan fought very hard to overcome her barriers and engaged with atWork Australia Job Coach Shaquille, who worked on getting her back into an old cleaning job at a school that she loved, they offered her a few hours a week but regardless, she worked as hard as what her barriers would allow for.

It was in collaboration with Susan’s GP that all could work toward setting realistic goals with her health condition and treatment in mind. As she was diligent in attending her appointments and would honour her mutual obligations, this would only strengthen this collaboration further resulting in an up to date awareness of where Susan was at.

With her medication under control, Susan and Shaquille were able to have a clear understanding of what it would take to increase her working hours. With allied health support, Susan was able to confidently increase her working capacity to 18 hours per week.

Job Coach Shaquille observed a remarkable transformation in her character, from displaying discernible anxiety from when they first met to a bright bubbly person who has worked very hard for her company.

When Susan got the news about her increased hours, she came into the office and could not wipe the smile off her face, she was so excited, cheering and overjoyed.

Shaquille remarked, “The key thing was to build a solid relationship with Susan, to where she would trust my word and would take the pushes with certain aspects in a good way. This really helped to build Susan’s confidence and effort surrounding her situation.”

This trust may have been strengthened through the assistances offered such as clothing, Police Checks, the Back2Work program, and a Working With Children’s check.

The increase in her confidence was palpable and her drive to success was outstanding according to Shaquille.

Susan is overjoyed with atWork Australia Rockingham and has built great relationships with everyone in the team.

Shaquille concluded, “Susan is an amazing bubbly individual, who has worked very hard for this opportunity. It’s honestly amazing to have seen her growth and development and I’m excited to see this continue.”
