Harley (20), was studying year 11 at Tafe and wanted to enter the work-force, looking for his first part-time role. Harley had a resume, however, he needed some assistance with updating it to promote his skills and attributes. Harley lives with anxiety and stress disorder. Harley reached out to atWork Australia in Cranbourne, Victoria.

Maria became Harley’s Job Coach in June and immediately focused on building rapport and trust to overcome some of his shy and reserved barriers. Overtime Maria worked with Harley to support his studies however, suggested the Jobs Now Club Program to start making the first step towards securing employment.

Regional Manager, Nicole worked with Harley during the Jobs Now Program to support building Harley’s Confidence. Maria mentored Harley and supported him with updating his resume and discussing suitable industries for employment. Harley who had expressed interest working in hospitality was referred to Employer Engagement Consultant, Martina, who knew of an employer looking for hospitality staff. Harley was successful and secured an interview at 9am the following day, however was unsure on how to prepare himself for interviewing questions and expectations.

On the day of the interview Maria met Harley at 8am and used motivational interviewing to build on Harley’s confidence. Maria reassured Harley and waited until the interview finished. Harley was successful for a job trial the following day. Maria coached Harley on the expectations of the trial and gave him some tips on how he can manage his anxiety.

Harley successfully secured the role with Maria’s assistance during the Christmas peak time and is still employed in this role.

When Maria told Harley the good news that he had been offered the job, he: “was so happy and proud of himself.” On the day of his interview, Maria gave Harley a crystal to hold in his hand to focus all his energy on to keep composed. Small things like this, Harley believes helped contribute to the success of gaining employment.

Harley says: “I am grateful for everyone that has supported me to achieve one of my biggest goals in gaining employment”.

Maria says: “Harley has grown and accomplished so much in a short period of time. Having never worked, he was shy and reserved. Now he is confident and still reaches out to me for advice and support. He has continued to keep composed and become very adaptable and resilient in this time, especially working his first job and commencing at the busiest time of the year.”

Maria adds: “Harley and I have built a strong relationship where we listen to each other and talk things through. He has changed from one-worded answers to full conversations about things and I have never been so proud as a Job Coach to watch this transition. I am very thankful he trusted me to support him getting through the journey of job searching to securing employment. I feel so grateful that his first transition into paid employment was a positive experience and one that we can both look back on as an achievement.”
