The journey to employment for recent school-leaver, Thomas, has been long and disheartening. However, atWork Australia have been able turn Thomas around with the right support to build his confidence.

From Shell Cove, New South Wales, Thomas, 20, is on the autism spectrum. After leaving school two years ago, Thomas has struggled to gain experience and skills in the workforce. He was eager to start working to become more financially independent, however, after several attempts at trying to find a job, he started to have doubts about his employability.

In December 2020, Thomas and his mum connected with atWork Australia. His Job Coach, Julie, focused on finding out what interested Thomas and the great attributes he would bring to an employer and their business. His happy nature and cheerful personality made those around him smile instantly. Thus, after a few appointments it was decided that a role in customer service would suit Thomas and allow him to thrive.

Julie put Thomas forward for a few roles, however, he was unsuccessful. This is when a local café owner, Gee, approached the atWork Australia team as she needed help to manage the lunch rush.

Gee was excited to meet Thomas and he was offered the job right at the end of the interview!

Thomas was so ecstatic and couldn’t believe it all happened so quickly. While signing the paperwork they were excitedly discussing breaking the news to the rest of the family.

Thomas explained “having a job means that I don’t have to rely on my parents or the disability pension to buy my own things. I can make my own money by working hard. I hope to stay employed by Gee for a long time and increase my hours as I gain more experience”.

Thomas has settled into his new role very well. His friendly and polite personality makes the customers happy to see him and they keep coming back for the great service. Gee explains that “Thomas is the perfect employee for her café”.

Thomas and his mum are so thankful he has been given this opportunity to work somewhere he can build his confidence and interpersonal relationships while gaining useful skills in hospitality. Thomas says he is “excited for his employment journey ahead”.

Thomas’ Job Coach, Julie, is thrilled Thomas was offered this job. Julie says it is “really such a pleasure to help people reach their goals, it really is a wonderful feeling”.
