Natasha came to atWork Australia in late February 2022 as a DSP volunteer. She was eager to work; however, she was worried that her intellectual impairment may compromise her ability to work.
From Loganholme, Queensland, Natasha lives with anxiety that results in a lack of confidence and self-doubt due to her intellectual impairment.
Natasha visited the atWork Australia office in Upper Mount Gravatt and was introduced to her Job Coach, Rommel, who put together a tailored Action Plan to create clear steps for Natasha to reach her goals.
Firstly, Rommel and Natasha worked together on building Natasha’s confidence. Rommel helped her work on her anxiety, providing strategies to recognise the positive aspects of life. He also reassured her that he would be with her every step of the way to support her journey.
After the initial appointment, Rommel also helped Natasha change some of the thinking patterns that were impacting her outlook. Rommel told Natasha to take three simple steps:
- Be open;
- Process your thoughts; and
- Asses the feelings.
Not long after Natasha’s second appointment, Rommel helped secure Natasha’s first interview. They worked together on practicing questions for the interview. Natasha was successful in the interview, however, they decided together that the cultural fit would not be good for her mental health.
Thus, Rommel helped Natasha secure her second interview as a Catering Assistant. A job she loves and is still in, to this day.
