Good news from atWork Australia Banner

After a negative experience with a previous employer, Jo-Anne is excited to find a role with an understanding company.

From Smithfield in Queensland, Jo-Anne was born with partial hearing loss. She felt this was impacting her ability to find work and as a result, her confidence in her abilities had fallen to an all-time low.

Jo-Anne was referred to atWork Australia where she met her Job Coach, Sophie, in the Cairns office.

The 61-year-old was eager to find work and Sophie could see straight away that Jo-Anne would be an active participant in whatever program was offered to her.

Jo-Anne had previous experience in office administration and wanted to take advantage of that for her next role, but without the pressure of having to use the telephone given her hearing difficulties.

Sophie discussed with Jo-Anne some of the programs offered by atWork Australia which she was immediately interested in participating in.

Together they worked to build her confidence and then enrolled Jo-Anne in a training program called Positivum.

The Positivum™ health and wellbeing program helps participants discover and understand the underlying beliefs that might be working against them in gaining employment.

It is a fantastic tool atWork Australia uses to profile clients in order to tailor support to their specific needs.

Jo-Anne also attended Jobs Now sessions which helps build skills in a range of areas including résumé and cover letter writing, interview skills, where to look for the right jobs, marketing yourself to potential employers, networking skills and more.

Sophie says, “Jo has actively participated in DES services with enthusiasm, even when she was lacking in her confidence.”

After several months, Jo-Anne attended an interview with a construction company who were needing administrative assistance, and much to her surprise, was offered the role on the spot.

“Jo-Anne was overwhelmed with excitement. She was offered the job on the spot at her interview and came straight to the office to tell me – her face was beaming with joy,” Sophie says.

Once Jo-Anne had the role, Sophie encouraged her to enrol in a Certificate III in Business, which she is now happily completing while working part-time with the construction company.

“Sophie has supported me all through the jobless months, obtaining courses so I have qualifications. She has a beautiful nature; I hope she keeps doing what she is doing – thanks Sophie for being you!”
