Thomas, 23, Victoria came to atWork Australia at a bit of a crossroads in life. He had completed his Year 12 Certificate and began a Bachelor’s Degree in IT however, the University environment wasn’t working for Thomas and he wasn’t quite sure what to do next, considering his goals and talents.
Thomas is on the Autism Spectrum and due to the challenges he faces in social settings, including anxiety and low self-confidence, it was hard for Thomas to concentrate or feel like he could thrive at University.
Then Thomas met his atWork Australia Job Coach Jenny via a referral from an allied health professional who knew Thomas and Jenny. Jenny and Thomas got to work quickly, looking at Thomas’s goals in both work and life, and his skills and passions.
Jenny knew instantly where to go to find Thomas his next job, contacting the Untapped Group, who assist in recruiting people from the Autism community for DXC’s Dandelion program and other corporate programs. Untapped are focussed on realising untapped talent and creating sustainable neurodiverse employment. “I could see Thomas was an extremely intelligent and motivated job seeker, he just needed to find an employer that provided the type of work environment he could thrive in – Untapped came to mind immediately,” Jenny said.
Timing was on Thomas’ side as just as he started looking for work, Untapped were looking for new talent for Trainee Cyber Security Analyst roles, for the latest DXC Dandelion Program. Thomas’ critical thinking, skills and goals were ideal for the role, as identified through the Dandelion Assessment Centre. An offer was made, and Thomas became one of Untapped’s newest employees – joining the ANZ Bank’s Spectrum Program.
Thomas is thriving in his new role, and thanks Jenny for all her support in connecting him with Untapped, leading the communication between Untapped and atWork Australia throughout Thomas’ application, clarifying any questions and giving positive feedback at every stage of the assessment and induction program. “I would still be lost without your help,” Thomas said.
Jenny and Untapped are also very satisfied with the outcome, the first employee placed into Untapped based on atWork Australia and Untapped’s new partnership. Untapped have gained great new talent to their team, and Jenny is extremely happy for Thomas, finding his calling and starting a role where he can build his career. “This is one of the reasons I do my role of a Job Coach, to be able to witness these life changing events for my clients,” Jenny said.
