Disability Employment Services client, Robert, found it hard to connect with his Job Coach at the Carrum Downs office. atWork Australia was flexible with Robert and tried out a few connections to see what his best fit would be.
When Job Coach Jarryd met Robert, he focused on building trust and rapport, and they found a mutual love of cars and the movie Top Gun.
Robert was happy to work with Jarryd and opened up about living with mental health conditions including depression and anxiety.
Jarryd worked with Robert on grounding techniques for when he was feeling overwhelmed. He also spoke to Robert about his strengths, skills, and interests.
Over time, Robert began to trust Jarryd and started to feel empowered to start looking at employment.
“Robert worked really hard on his wellbeing and mental health. He started to achieve goals he thought were once unattainable,” said Job Coach Jarryd.
Together they started looking at the types of industries Robert was interested in. They built up his resume to feature his skills and strengths.
Robert was then ready to apply for roles. Jarryd introduced Robert to the Employer Engagement team who advocated for Robert and looked for an employer who would be a good fit.
When he landed an interview as a Labourer, Jarryd was there to coach him through the moment, reminding him of his capabilities.
Robert was successful in his interview, and atWork Australia support him financially to purchase the work-related clothing he would need to start his role.
Robert is now supported through the atWork Australia In-Work Support team to sustain his employment. They help support him with his mental health and work with his employer so they both can thrive.
“Without leaning on Jarryd and the atWork Australia team I would be lost,” said Robert.
Robert has now almost reached a full year in employment.
