Vanessa has been unemployed for a few years and transitioned across to atWork Australia to receive support from the Workforce Australia team in July 2022.

Vanessa was shy and faced mental health barriers due to her period of unemployment. However, Vanessa was eager and motivated to receive support.

She was connected with local Job Coach, Tansy, and the pair got to work on creating a plan for Vanessa to reach her goals.

As a first step, Vanessa was enrolled into the Powered by Positivum program, as well as Wellness Services, to help her overcome her mental health barriers. To learn more about Workforce Australia and how to meet her monthly obligations, Vanessa then participated in the Ready Set Go program.

During this time, Tansy referred Vanessa to various jobs, however, Vanessa was unsuccessful. Determined not to give up and do what she needed to build her skills, Tansy suggested a TAFE course.

First, Vanessa enrolled in a Certificate III in Business Administration. Then a little while later, a Certificate III in Information Technology. It was around this time that Tansy heard of another program she thought would be perfect for Vanessa, a Digital Workplace program run by TAFE WA. Vanessa attended the information session and submitted an expression of interest. Vanessa was successful in securing a position, which included three weeks of class followed by one week in work placement.

Vanessa completed her work placement with West Perth Department of Transport. In that short week she received great feedback from a client on her customer service. Then, to Vanessa’s surprise, she was offered a six-month contract with the intent for her to continue on in a permanent capacity.

Vanessa showed significant growth; she went from being shy and only doing her study, to being open to attending workshops and taking any opportunity given to her. Being in full-time employment has given Vanessa more confidence in herself.

Her new employer said, “From the first day, Vanessa applied herself with dedication, keenness and commitment. She utilised the exposure of her work placement as an opportunity to make a good impression, and it has paid its dividends.”
