Harley stands proudly next to an atWork Australia banner. Quote reads "I would still be struggling to gain employment if it was not for Carol and Samantha." said Harley

At 29 years old, Indigenous client, Harley, had never held paid employment before.

Harley felt his low literacy skills, his addictions and life choices meant he was not going to get anywhere when looking for work.

He started working with the team at the Workforce Australia office in Northam, WA. With the assistance of Job Coach, Carol, and Employer Engagement Consultant, Samantha, Harley started working his first ever job in night-fill at the local supermarket.

“Harley wasn’t engaged until he began to feel comfortable with the team. When he realised we were on his side, he started to engage with employment prospects and started meeting his points targets,” said Carol.

As part of Workforce Australia, clients are required to meet targets by taking part in flexible activities such as training, job searching or other activities to become work ready.

Carol has been a huge support to Harley and helps at every progress appointment to make sure his points target was tailored to Harleys’ circumstances.

Harley took steps on his own to gain support for his addictions, and when he was ready, he began to work with Samantha to search for employment.

Together they decided a night-fill role might be suitable. Samantha supported Harley to fill in the application online. Together they practiced interviews and Samantha came with Harley to meet the employer.

Harley was successful in landing a role. The atWork Australia team was there again to support him to complete his online induction.

Harley was financially supported to purchase work clothes and had just mentioned his phone is broken so he couldn’t get his shifts. The team will now support him with a new phone to be able to access his shifts.

“Harley has flourished in his new role, and with his new employment has come with a new self-belief and confidence,” said Carol.

“I would still be struggling to gain employment if it was not for Carol and Samantha. I couldn’t have done it without them,” said Harley.

Harley is now confident and smiling when he comes in to see Carol and Samantha. He has confidence and a positive attitude. atWork Australia will continue to support Harley through In-Work Support.
