Good news from atWork Australia.

Technology moves fast. For Barbara, who spent most of her life caring for her family as a mother, this was one of her biggest barriers when looking for work.

At 66, Barbara was not confident with computers and had little experience with the online world, including searching for work, or emailing potential employers.

When she started working with Job Coach Katarina, at the Batemans Bay atWork Australia office, she expressed her desire to learn more about computers.

“Barbara is a kind, caring person with great people skills but she had low confidence and experienced a lot of self-doubt when it came to applying for jobs and presenting herself to employers,” said Katarina.

Katarina referred Barbara to Employability Skills Training to improve her computer literacy and confidence in using computers.

Barbara learned how to write and type a cover letter. Barbara also learned how to use email so she could follow up with employers about how her applications went.

“Throughout Barbara’s journey in Workforce Australia, she has overcome many barriers which has boosted her self-esteem, confidence, and capabilities. With her new computer skills, she can participate in online interviews along with searching and applying for jobs online.”

Barbara is appreciating the flexibility in the new Workforce Australia Points Based Activation System and how it has allowed her to tailor her activities to suit her needs. She has so far participated in activities including study, Wellness Services, job searches and job interviews.

“The Employability Skills Training course was very beneficial to me in improving my skills and confidence. I now feel a lot more comfortable applying for employment,” said Barbara.

‘My Job Coach, Katarina, was so helpful, kind, and understanding. She really helped to put me at ease. I would not have gotten through the course without her assistance.”

Using her newfound skills to continue searching for work, Barbara’s story highlights the effectiveness of our basic computer skills training materials, which is designed to boost confidence and competence in job seekers.
